Internationally acclaimed South African photographer Brett Florens, launched his career in 1992 while fulfilling national service obligations in the Police riot unit. Fortuitously, a photographic unit was formed to document political changes, and Brett jumped at the chance to join it. With no photographic experience whatsoever, Brett had to learn how to photograph and document volatile situations. His unit evolved into a department dealing with politically motivated crimes and township violence, and photography was necessary to record this important slice of South Africa’s history. Brett thrived on the opportunity and soon found himself in the thick of newsworthy events, creating images that found a ready market in newspapers and other media and having his work published around the globe. His passion for photography had begun.
Since then, Brett’s devotion to photography has taken him from photojournalism to a highly successful wedding, commercial, and fashion photographer, with longstanding clients such as Wonderbra, Playtex, Quiksilver and Roxy. Brett has achieved numerous accolades along the way, including the prestigious distinction of being chosen as the representative Nikon Wedding Photographer worldwide for Photokina in Germany. Brett has worked with some of South Africa’s most famous personalities, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk, Trevor Manuel, and Jonty Rhodes when he photographed them for a coffee table book “Perfect Weekend”. He has published his very own wedding manual, “The Brett Florens Guide to Photographing Weddings” with Amherst Media USA, and he has produced 3 tutorial DVD’s. Brett runs photographic workshops around the world and his most recent accolade was speaking at the WPPI Conference in Vegas, USA in March, before flying off to Bucharest where he was invited by Nikon Romania to lecture to a live and on-line audience of 3 000 plus photographers. Brett Will be speaking at the SWPP Convention in January in London and WPPI in Las Vegas in March.
